# Why do AI agents give up on websites?

AI agents give up when something costs them steps they cannot afford or hides what they came for: pricing behind "Contact sales," popups and cookie walls, CAPTCHAs and bot blocks, content that only loads after scripts run, and form errors that don’t say what went wrong. Unlike a person, the agent rarely pushes through. It picks another site.

## Agents work on a budget

An agent has a limited number of steps and a deadline, and a list of other sites it could try. A person who hits a popup closes it. An agent may spend several steps figuring out the popup, or stall on it entirely.

## The five most common blockers

### 1\. Hidden pricing

When Siteline ran a simulated Claude agent through 534 attempts on B2B software sites, access errors and hidden pricing sent the agent to third-party sites for answers. If the price isn't on your page, the agent will find one somewhere else, possibly a competitor's.

### 2\. Popups, chat widgets and cookie walls

Email capture modals and chat bubbles can cover the content an agent needs. Cookie walls are harder: we never bypass consent banners, and neither should any agent you want as a customer.

### 3\. Bot blocks and CAPTCHAs

Bot defenses built for the older web often cannot tell a helpful shopping agent from a malicious bot, so they block legitimate agent purchases. A CAPTCHA is the end of the road for most agents.

### 4\. Content that only appears after scripts run

Some agents read the page as delivered. If your plan table or product details render later in the browser, they may see an empty page.

### 5\. Vague form errors

"Something went wrong" tells an agent nothing. It retries, fails again and reports the form as broken.

## Cold-start agents have it worst

Agents that run their own browser in the cloud usually arrive with no saved login, cookies or history. They meet every banner and check that your returning customers never see.

## How to find yours

The quickest way is to watch agents try. A free GhostOwl scan shows the step where each agent gave up and its message to its owner.
